At least 26 people were killed following a landslide on Friday evening in the sub-locality of Machember, in Mukurtwo, Elgeyo Marakwet County in western Kenya, following heavy rains, the Ministry of the Interior said.
Search and rescue teams are trying to reach isolated areas, but landslides have made several roads impassable.
The Kapsowar–Chesoi Road was completely cut off, complicating rescue efforts. Air support and first responders were deployed for evacuation and medical care.
In addition, a 15-year-old boy died in Kisumu West after being swept away by the Obonyo River. Other areas, including Tana River, Garissa, Laikipia, and Kisumu, also experienced flooding, resulting in livestock losses and the displacement of hundreds of households.
In Mombasa, localized flooding affected the informal settlements of Mburukenge and Kaa Chonjo, partly due to incomplete sanitation work.
The Ministry of Home Affairs and the Kenya Meteorological Department have warned of continued heavy rainfall in several areas, increasing the risk of landslides and flooding, particularly in hilly and riverside areas.
A team including the police, the Kenyan Red Cross, and other local authorities is coordinating rescue and evacuation efforts. The public is urged to avoid flooded roads, stay informed of official alerts, and evacuate at-risk areas.
