Khadija Mahécor Diouf : « Nous ne développerons pas le Sénégal en excluant les femmes des lieux de décision »
During a panel discussion at the first PASTEF-Les Patriotes congress, the mayor of Golf Sud, Khadija Mahécor Diouf, delivered a powerful plea for greater representation of women in political and administrative decision-making bodies. At the outset of her address, she thanked the congress organizers before tackling a topic she considers fundamental to the future of Senegal and the party. "I hold the saddest title in Senegal," she declared to the audience. "I am the only female mayor in PASTEF." This statement immediately set the tone for her speech, which focused on the underrepresentation of women in elected and decision-making positions.
Recalling that there are over 600 local authorities in Senegal but only 18 female mayors, Khadija Mahécor Diouf denounced a situation she considers incompatible with the country's ambitions for transformation and sovereignty. "We talk about sovereignty, about the development of Senegal and Africa, but we cannot ignore more than 52% of the population," she emphasized. For the local elected official, sovereignty cannot be fully realized as long as women remain marginalized in the spaces where strategic decisions are made. "Women are not where things change. They are not sufficiently present in strategic positions where they can bring their vision of development to bear," she lamented.
According to her, Senegalese women play a crucial role in the country's economic and social life. Present in agriculture, commerce, services, and entrepreneurship, they contribute daily to wealth creation and national development. "Women are in the fields, in the markets, in businesses. They are everywhere in the economy. But when it comes to making decisions, decisions are made for them," she lamented. Faced with this situation, Khadija Mahécor Diouf called on PASTEF to fully embrace its ambition for change by making the promotion of women's leadership a political priority. According to her, a party that aspires to be revolutionary can no longer avoid the debate on the place of women in leadership positions and elected offices. "Women are agents of sovereignty. They are transforming this country every day," she affirmed.
Advocating for greater female representation, she emphasized that women possess the same skills, training, and capacity to manage public affairs as their male counterparts. Khadija Mahécor Diouf believes that Senegal's systemic transformation will necessarily involve an increased presence of women in positions of responsibility. "The sovereignty we want to build in Senegal will be achieved when more women lead our communities and fully participate in decisions that shape the country's future," she concluded.
