L'armateur MSC annonce suspendre "jusqu'à nouvel ordre" ses transports de marchandises vers le Mali
The container ship owner, the Italian-Swiss global giant MSC, announced it is suspending "until further notice" its land deliveries of goods to Mali, due to "security problems" and "fuel shortages" caused by a jihadist blockade, in a statement dated Thursday.
For several weeks, jihadists from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), affiliated with Al-Qaeda, have imposed a blockade on fuel imports as far as Bamako, paralyzing the economy of this landlocked Sahelian country dependent on imports.
"Road freight transport to Mali is temporarily suspended until further notice," the carrier's statement said, adding that it was no longer "accepting orders for Mali."
Earlier in the week, the French company CMA-CGM, the world's third largest shipping company, announced it was suspending its operations in Mali before reversing this decision after an agreement was reached with the authorities.
This strategy of strangling JNIM has forced the Malian state to close schools for two weeks, prevents agricultural harvests in several regions and severely disrupts access to electricity.
On Thursday, France, the former colonial power, indicated that it was following "with genuine concern" the deteriorating security situation in Mali.
The United States and the United Kingdom, for their part, announced last week the withdrawal of their non-essential personnel from Mali, and several foreign embassies, including France, have asked their nationals to leave the territory.
The military, in power in Mali since two coups in 2020 and 2021, had promised to stem the jihadist expansion that has been shaking the country for more than a decade.
