Le Mali interdit l’importation, la production et la vente de chicha (des peines de prison instaurées)
In Mali, an interministerial decree published yesterday, Tuesday, July 7, prohibits the importation, production, distribution, sale, marketing, possession, advertising, promotion, and use of shisha, shisha tobacco, and their related flavorings. Violators face prison sentences and heavy fines.
Possession of these products is punishable by a sentence of 3 to 12 months in prison and a fine of up to 2 million CFA francs.
Establishments used as places for storing or consuming shisha will be closed for a period of 6 to 12 months.
Producers and importers of these prohibited substances face prison sentences ranging from one to three years, along with fines of up to 15 million CFA francs.
Distributors and traders will also face sentences ranging from one to three years in prison and fines of up to 3 million CFA francs.
The promotion, personal use, and advertising of shisha are also severely punished. Establishments used as places for the storage or consumption of shisha will be closed for a period of 6 to 12 months.
Protecting young people from the risks of addiction
If the offence is repeated, this temporary closure will become a permanent closure.
Through this interministerial decree, the Malian authorities intend to protect young people from the risks of addiction, protect public health and eradicate practices harmful to society.
