A contingent of the Malagasy army claimed on Sunday to have taken control of the country's armed forces, after joining anti-government protesters the day before and calling on security forces to "refuse orders."
"From now on, all orders from the Malagasy army, whether land, air or military, will come from the headquarters of CAPSAT (Army Corps of Personnel and Administrative and Technical Services)," announced officers of this contingent in a video statement.
In 2009, this base, located on the outskirts of the Malagasy capital, had already led a mutiny during the popular uprising that brought the current president to power.
A new demonstration is planned for Sunday morning in the Malagasy capital, while a funeral ceremony for a soldier killed during a demonstration the day before was underway.
Saturday's demonstration in Antananarivo was one of the largest since the start of the protests on September 25, launched by the Gen Z movement to protest water and electricity cuts and which has turned into a challenge to the political leaders in power, starting with President Andry Raojelina.
