Mali : après l'enlèvement de l'opposant Mountaga Tall, son fils disparaît aussi (avocats)

The son of Malian lawyer and opposition figure Mountaga Tall "disappeared" on May 16, after his father was "abducted" earlier in the month, their lawyers announced Wednesday, demanding their release.

Mr. Tall was "abducted" on May 2 by "hooded men", according to his family, in Mali, a Sahelian country ruled by a junta that has restricted freedoms.

Mountaga Tall was a member of the M5 movement, a major player in the protest that contributed to the fall of the regime of former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta (IBK) in 2020. Initially allied with the military who came to power in 2020, he later distanced himself from them, becoming one of their critics.

In a statement dated Tuesday and sent to AFP on Wednesday, his lawyers said they "learned with dismay of the disappearance on Saturday, May 16, 2026 of Cheick Mamadou Tall, (his) eldest son, following a phone call received" by the latter.

The group says it is "concerned by the commission of this illegal act, which comes after the abduction" of Mountaga Tall. In a statement signed by four lawyers, it calls on "the competent administrative and judicial authorities to do everything possible to ensure that both men regain their freedom" and that the circumstances of their disappearance are fully investigated.

The abduction of Mr. Tall occurred a few days after the deadly attacks of April 25 carried out by jihadists from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM, affiliated with Al-Qaeda) with rebels from the Azawad Liberation Front (ALF) against strategic positions of the military regime.

Mountaga Tall is providing defense for several soldiers arrested in recent months on the orders of the junta for "attempting to destabilize institutions".

He has also filed appeals in various jurisdictions to challenge the decision by the ruling military to dissolve Malian political parties.
