Mali : Assimi Goïta prend les commandes de la Défense après la mort de Sadio Camara
A major shift is taking place at the highest levels of the Malian state. The head of the junta, Colonel Assimi Goïta, will now combine his roles as President of the Transition with those of Minister of Defense. This decision, formalized by a decree read on Monday on public television (ORTM), comes as a response to the absence of General Sadio Camara, who was killed on April 25th.
General Camara, considered one of the unshakeable pillars of the military regime, was killed in unprecedented attacks carried out by jihadist groups and Tuareg rebels. This security crisis plunged Mali into a period of uncertainty and heightened anxiety, forcing the head of state to take direct control of the military.
According to the decree published nine days after Mr. Camara's death, President Goïta "now assumes the functions of Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs." By thus concentrating sovereign powers, Assimi Goïta is attempting to stabilize a security situation deemed critical and to reassure the ranks of a Malian army strained by these recent offensives.
