Mali: des bus de transport à destination de Bamako incendiés par des jihadistes
Several transport buses bound for Bamako were set on fire on Saturday in central Mali by jihadists who have been imposing a road blockade on various routes leading to the Malian capital since the end of April, according to witnesses and a civil society official.
Mali is gripped by uncertainty after large-scale coordinated attacks carried out on April 25 and 26 by jihadists from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), allied with Al-Qaeda, and the rebellion of the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), predominantly Tuareg.
The capital has also been subject to a road blockade since April 30 by jihadists who have blocked several essential routes leading to Bamako, while Mali, a landlocked country, is dependent on imports by road.
In addition to producing negative effects on the country's economy, already severely affected by more than a decade of instability, the blockade considerably hinders the free movement of people, particularly to reach Bamako.
On Saturday, jihadists "set fire to several transport buses in Zambougou (central region), on the Ségou-Bamako road," a witness who requested anonymity for his safety told AFP.
According to another witness, "they made the passengers get out and set fire to the vehicles."
A local civil society official confirmed the information to AFP.
"People didn't have time to save their belongings, everything was reduced to ashes. Carcasses of vehicles are still burning on the asphalt. The scale of the losses is considerable," he told AFP.
These attacks against transport vehicles are the latest in the country since the jihadists imposed the blockade.
Several convoys transporting goods have already been burned in recent days, according to witnesses.
On Thursday, the jihadists announced the opening of a "humanitarian corridor for the sick" in a video.
