Mali : Du lithium, en veux-tu en voilà !
In Mali, the President of the Transition, General Assimi Goïta, presided over the official inauguration ceremony of the country's second lithium mine in Bougouni on Monday, November 3rd. The ceremony was attended by the Governor of Bougouni, the Malian Minister of Mines, Professor Amadou Keita, the Chinese Ambassador, and traditional leaders of the region, among others.
The Bougouni mine is part of the Mali Kura Vision, which aims to transform the country's natural resources into a lever for sustainable and inclusive growth.
$65 million invested during the first phase of the project
It is being developed by Kodal Mining UK Ltd and Hainan Mining Co. Ltd, in partnership with the Malian government and local investors who hold 35% of its capital. According to government data, the first phase of the project required an investment of $65 million for an expected annual production of approximately 120,000 tonnes of spodumene concentrate.
According to the Malian Minister of Mines, the exploitation of this deposit will contribute to public finances through taxes, duties, dividends and participation in four mining funds, including the Local Development Fund and the one dedicated to energy and hydraulic infrastructure.
Mali on track to become the leading lithium producer in Africa
As mentioned, the Bougouni mine is the second lithium mine to be put into operation under the Transition regime. In December 2024, President Assimi Goita inaugurated the Goulamina mine in the southwest of the country.
This deposit contains over 200 million tonnes of ore with a lithium oxide content of 1.7%. "Mining has already begun with the production of 85,000 tonnes, of which 35,000 tonnes have already been shipped to ports."
"By combining production from Bougouni and Goulamina, Mali is expected to reach 590,000 tons of lithium production in 2026, thus becoming the leading producer in Africa," authorities stated. This is good news for the country, which aims to make the mining sector a pillar of its economic sovereignty.
