Mali : Le JNIM sabote les lignes de l'OMVS et menace sa centrale électrique (Serge Daniel)
The terrorist threat in the Sahel has just reached a new critical level by directly attacking the sub-region's strategic energy infrastructure. According to exclusive information reported this Monday, May 11, 2026, by journalist Serge Daniel, a recognized specialist in security issues and jihadist movements in the Sahel, fighters from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), affiliated with Al-Qaeda, sabotaged "a section of the Senegal River Basin Development Organization's (OMVS) power line on Malian territory."
A seasoned field journalist and leading correspondent for international media outlets such as RFI and AFP, Serge Daniel emphasizes that this sabotage of the high-voltage power line is merely a prelude to a broader threat. According to his sources, the attackers "are threatening to attack the power plant itself," a vital piece of infrastructure for the energy balance of Mali, Mauritania, and, above all, Senegal. By targeting this network, JNIM is clearly seeking to paralyze essential services and exacerbate the sense of insecurity beyond the usual combat zones.
The Manantali Dam: Senegal's energy lifeline under pressure
Senegal is particularly vulnerable to this escalation. The country receives a substantial portion of its electricity from the Manantali Dam, located deep within Malian territory. If terrorist groups continue to proliferate in the Kayes region and increase their sabotage activities, the risk of part of the dam being dynamited becomes an alarming possibility for Senegalese authorities. Such an attack on the dam or its power transmission lines would inevitably lead to a massive production shortfall.
The OMVS not only manages energy but also water resources for several states. Successful sabotage of these strategic facilities would inevitably plunge Senegal into an era of severe power outages, highlighting the fragility of energy sovereignty in the face of the porous borders of the Sahel.
