Mali: l'ONU "gravement préoccupée" par des informations sur des exécutions extrajudiciaires
The UN on Tuesday expressed its deep concern about the deteriorating human rights situation in Mali and reports of extrajudicial killings by government forces.
Mali is gripped by uncertainty after large-scale coordinated attacks carried out on April 25 and 26 by jihadists from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM, allied with Al-Qaeda) and the Tuareg-dominated Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) rebellion against strategic positions of the ruling junta in Bamako.
Several towns and villages in northern Mali are now under the control of jihadists and their allies in the FLA.
Defense Minister Sadio Camara, 47, a key figure in the junta, was killed in Kati, a junta stronghold near the capital, Bamako, during attacks that targeted several major cities.
"We are deeply concerned about the deteriorating human rights situation throughout Mali," a spokesman for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Seif Magango, told reporters in Geneva, speaking from Nairobi.
These attacks "have caused numerous civilian casualties and forced many others to flee their homes," he said, adding that further clashes took place "over the weekend, causing further disastrous consequences for civilians."
Mr. Magango also indicated that "very worrying reports indicate extrajudicial executions and abductions allegedly perpetrated by members of the security forces following the attacks of April 25 and 26".
On May 2, Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, spokesman for the rebels, indicated that "mass graves containing several bodies were discovered today in the Amchach camp, located in Tessalit, which the FLA took control of the day before, following the withdrawal of the Malian army and the Russian mercenaries of the Africa Corps".
"The initial evidence gathered suggests that these civilians were taken to this base before being executed there," he said on Facebook.
AFP was unable to independently verify this information.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, is calling for an immediate ceasefire and urging all parties to guarantee the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, the spokesman said.
Mr. Turk also calls on the Malian authorities and all non-state armed groups to allow and facilitate safe, sustainable and unhindered humanitarian access to all those in need, Mr. Magango added.
