Lieutenant General Sadio Camara was a seasoned Minister of Defense. Very discreet, he rarely spoke to the press, but he was a key figure in the junta, a shrewd strategist, and the architect of Mali's security overhaul.
The man of the reconquest of the territory
Indeed, since his arrival at the head of the Ministry of Defence in 2020, Sadio Camara has imposed his vision, that of the reconquest of the entire territory.
To achieve this, he used the diplomatic apparatus, forging new strategic partnerships with countries like Russia and China. These partnerships enabled him to modernize his defense capabilities in no time.
Sadio Camara has been caught several times overseeing the acquisition of advanced military equipment such as the latest generation of aerial vehicles, surveillance and attack drones and combat helicopters.
The acquisition of this equipment has completely changed the situation on the ground. The balance of power has shifted in favor of the FAMA, who were previously confined to a defensive posture.
Military infrastructure, reinforced
The Malian armed forces are now hunting down terrorists and rebels. One of the best illustrations of the FAMA's growing strength is the capture of Kidal in November 2023.
In addition to modernizing the defense apparatus, General Sadio Camara also invested in strengthening military infrastructure.
Construction of new camps has begun in several locations across the country, while others are being inaugurated in San, Kita, Koutiala, and Diéma. Ultimately, the illustrious deceased actively contributed to redefining the contours of a Mali that aspires to stand tall, sovereign, and master of its own destiny.
His assassination is therefore a severe blow to the Republic, but also to the President of the Transition, Assimi Goita, of whom he was one of the closest collaborators. Before reaching the highest office in the land, the two men had fought together on various fronts.
Given the numerous crushing defeats he inflicted on the terrorists, it was widely suspected that he was in their crosshairs. But no one imagined that these purveyors of violence would succeed in neutralizing him. This proves that even weakened terrorists can still strike at the heart of the regime and claim victims.
