Niger : La veuve de l’ex-président Baré Mainassara nommée ambassadrice aux États-Unis
Ms. Clémence Aïssatou Habi, widow of former Nigerien President Ibrahim Baré Mainassara, has been appointed Niger's ambassador to the United States. A physician specializing in parasitology and HIV/AIDS treatment, she formerly directed the Pasteur Clinic in Niamey and taught at the Faculty of Medicine.
Wife of the head of state who came to power in a coup d'état in 1996 and was assassinated in a putsch in 1999, Ms. Baré has lived in France for many years, where she campaigned with her political family for an independent inquiry into her husband's death.
His appointment marks his official return to Nigerien diplomacy.
