Armed men abducted 13 women and a baby overnight from Saturday to Sunday in northwestern Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, which has been experiencing a resurgence of mass kidnappings for several weeks.
Nigeria is regularly the victim of mass kidnappings, a practice that has spread since the abduction of nearly 300 girls in Chibok, in Borno State (east), in 2014 by Boko Haram, but recent weeks have seen a resurgence of these acts which prompted the Nigerian president to declare a "national security emergency" on Wednesday.
In addition to jihadists, armed groups locally called "bandits" terrorize many states in the northwest and central parts of the country where they carry out kidnappings for ransom, attack villages, kill residents and burn down houses after looting them.
"Bandits stormed our village (...) and kidnapped 14 people, including a bride and 10 bridesmaids," Aliyu Abdullahi, a resident of Chacho village, located less than an hour's drive from Sokoto, the capital of the state of the same name, told AFP.
He also specified that two other women, including a mother and her baby, had also been kidnapped.
In traditional wedding ceremonies in this part of the country, young brides spend a first night with their bridesmaids in their new home, before the husbands move into the marital home in turn.
The bandits have camps in a forest straddling the states of Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi and Niger, from where they launch attacks against villages.
According to Mr. Abdullahi, Chacho was already the victim of bandits in October who kidnapped 13 people.
"We had to pay a ransom to secure their release. Today, we are facing the same situation," he told AFP by telephone.
Some Nigerian states, such as Zamfara and Katsina, neighbors of Sokoto, have concluded peace agreements with the "bandits" since last year, but security experts believe that these arrangements allow these groups to secure their bases while continuing attacks elsewhere.
A series of "peace" agreements have recently been concluded in Katsina State, as in other northern Nigerian states, providing for the cessation of gang activity in exchange for a commitment that they will not be attacked.
The attack was confirmed by an intelligence report that AFP was able to consult.
"Sokoto saw a notable increase in kidnappings perpetrated by bandits in November," notes the intelligence report, which believes this resurgence could be linked to peace agreements made in neighboring states.
"As a result, some bandits might move to areas where there is less military pressure. This change could lead to an increase in mass kidnappings in places like Sokoto," he adds.
