Nigeria: la police reconnaît un enlèvement de masse de Chrétiens
Nigerian police admitted on Tuesday evening that armed men had abducted worshippers during Sunday services in Kaduna State (central Nigeria) on Sunday, after initially rejecting allegations to that effect.
A senior Christian dignitary and a village chief told AFP on Monday that more than 160 people had been abducted on Sunday from several churches.
A security report prepared for the United Nations reported that around one hundred people had been abducted, while the Christian Association of Nigeria indicated that it had a list of 177 missing persons.
The Kaduna State police chief and two senior government officials initially denied the reports, stating that security agents had visited the scene and found no evidence, with one of them calling the reports "completely false".
But in a statement made Tuesday evening, national police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin finally conceded that an "abduction" had taken place and that law enforcement had begun operations to "locate and rescue the victims safely and restore calm to the area."
He added that the statements made by the police and other officials in Kaduna State were aimed "at avoiding unnecessary panic while the facts were being confirmed."
Mass kidnappings are frequent in Nigeria, most perpetrated by criminal gangs, referred to locally as "bandits", seeking ransoms.
Even though paying ransoms is against the law, kidnappings have become "a structured and lucrative industry" that generated some $1.66 million between July 2024 and June 2025, according to a report by SBM Intelligence, a Lagos-based consultancy.
In November, more than 300 students and teachers from a Catholic school in the center of the country were kidnapped, then released.
