Nigéria : Trois avions militaires américains débarquent dans le pays
In Nigeria, three US military aircraft carrying troops and weapons landed in Borno State between Thursday, February 12th and Friday, February 13th, according to the New York Times.
A U.S. Defense Department official told the newspaper that these initial arrivals mark the start of C-17 cargo flights to three different sites in Nigeria. More aircraft carrying personnel and equipment are expected to arrive in the coming weeks, he said.
They "will not assume any direct operational role"
The spokesman for Nigeria's Defense Headquarters, Major General Samaila Uba, told the Wall Street Journal that US troops will not participate in the fighting on the ground.
They "will not assume any direct operational role. Nigerian forces retain full command authority, make all operational decisions and direct all missions on the sovereign territory of Nigeria," the senior officer stated.
The American colleagues will only have an "advisory role at several sites".
The Nigerian general's statements have been confirmed by the Americans. The 200 men who will be sent to Nigeria are mostly analysts, advisors, and trainers. Their mission is to support the Nigerian armed forces in targeted counterterrorism operations.
