In Masindi, western Uganda, an extraordinary story has shaken a family and an entire village. Godwin Baguma, who had been missing for several weeks due to mental health issues, was declared dead after his brothers identified a body found in a field.

Godwin Baguma was presumed dead after a decomposing body was discovered in a sugarcane field in Kisanja. Taken to the morgue at Masindi Hospital, the remains were identified by two of the family's sons as those of their brother, despite their badly decomposed state.

Convinced of Godwin's death, the family hastily arranged a funeral. The burial ceremony took place on Sunday, followed by the announcement of a final wake scheduled for the next day. The news quickly spread throughout Kijura and the surrounding villages, where many residents came to offer their condolences.

The next day, as preparations continued, a rumor began to circulate. Godwin had supposedly been seen alive in the village of Kihanguzi, in the Masindi district. Initially skeptical, his relatives decided to investigate. They found him asleep at a friend's house, very much alive. The shock was immense. Godwin was immediately taken home, bringing the mourning period to a close.

The discovery forced the family to exhume the body, which had been buried by mistake. The examination revealed that it was in fact an unknown person. For the neighbors, the scene seemed surreal. "It was like something out of a movie. People were bewildered and frightened," said Florence Bikorwa, a resident of the village.

The police have confirmed the incident and opened an investigation to establish the identity of the body mistakenly buried. They are calling for the utmost care in identifying decomposing bodies and reiterating that any exhumation must adhere to legal procedures: a court order, approval from local authorities, and police supervision. For Godwin Baguma's family, the relief of finding him alive is now intertwined with the difficulty of coping with this tragic error.
