Port de Praia : Un virus mortel détecté sur un paquebot, faut-il s'inquiéter ?
The World Health Organization (WHO) is seeking to reassure the public. The potential outbreak of hantavirus, which tragically caused the deaths of three people aboard a cruise ship currently docked in the port of Praia, Cape Verde, presents a "low risk" of spreading. This assessment was made on Monday by the WHO Regional Director for Europe, Hans Kluge, in an official statement.
“The risk to the general public remains low. There is no reason to panic or impose travel restrictions,” stated Hans Kluge. To support this position, he reiterated that hantavirus infections are rare. These illnesses are generally linked to direct exposure to the excrement or secretions of infected rodents and, crucially, are “not easily transmitted between people.”
This clarification comes as the ship is under close surveillance by Cape Verdean health authorities. The WHO emphasizes that the priority remains the local management of the incident and the precise identification of the source of contamination on board the cruise ship, while reiterating that no international travel restrictions are recommended at this stage.
