Constitutional Court President Kossi Dorothée Sossa announced the final results of the April 12, 2026 presidential election on the evening of Thursday, April 16. As widely expected, the ticket of Romuald Wadagni and Mariam Chabi Talata was declared the winner by a substantial margin.
Out of 4,853,546 valid votes cast, the Wadagni-Talata ticket secured 4,575,449 votes, representing 94.27%. Their opponents, Paul Hounkpè and Rock Hounwanou, received only 278,297 votes, or 5.73% of the valid votes.
These results mean the Romuald Wadagni-Mariam Chabi Talata duo secured an absolute majority of votes, winning the election outright in the first round.
Romuald Wadagni is therefore elected President of the Republic, with his running mate Mariam Chabi Talata as Vice-President.
Candidates have five days from this Thursday to file appeals if they contest the proclaimed results.
Barring a major upheaval, the Constitutional Court is unlikely to receive any such petitions. Paul Hounkpè himself conceded defeat even before the provisional results were announced by the National Autonomous Electoral Commission (CENA).
The court's results can therefore be considered final. Beyond the impressive score achieved by the Wadagni-Talata ticket, it is worth noting an above-average voter turnout.
According to the Constitutional Court's figures, 5,020,401 out of 7,897,287 registered voters cast their ballots, representing a turnout of 63.57%.
Regarding the overall conduct of the election, the high court noted several irregularities, including instances of ballot box stuffing, numerical inconsistencies between the number of registered voters, actual voters, and valid votes cast, as well as the premature opening or delayed opening of some polling stations.
"Some of these shortcomings led to the cancellation and/or correction of votes," informed the President of the Constitutional Court.
He clarified, however, that these "irregularities are not significant enough to compromise the overall sincerity, transparency, and credibility of the election."
