Présidentielle en Côte d’Ivoire : Les raisons officielles du rejet des candidatures de Gbagbo, Thiam et Affi N’Guessan
A fourth term seems within reach. Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara will not have to face Laurent Gbagbo and Tidjane Thiam in next month's presidential election. The candidacies of these two opposition heavyweights were rejected by the Constitutional Council.
The old Ivorian leader is therefore preparing to do battle with "featherweights", as some observers of Ivorian political life indicate.
Gbagbo, Thiam and Affi N'Guessan were sidelined for various reasons.
Laurent Gbagbo is not registered on the electoral roll
The first, in this case Laurent Gbagbo, is not registered on the electoral roll. He is therefore not eligible to vote, explained the President of the Constitutional Council, Chantal Nanaba Camara, yesterday Monday. His file also contained several "invalid endorsements."
Like Laurent Gbagbo, Tidjane Thiam is suffering from his removal from the electoral list. "In the context of the examination of eligibility for the election of the President of the Republic, the Constitutional Council has consistently required the status of elector as a condition of eligibility... The candidacy of Mr. Thiam Cheick Thiam must therefore be declared inadmissible," declared Chantal Nanaba Camara.
FPI President's Case Rejected for "Lack of Sponsorships"
Affi N'Guessan's case is different. The FPI leader was registered on the electoral roll, but did not have sufficient sponsorships. His application was therefore rejected for "lack of sponsorships," the constitutional judge informed the court.
