Putsch déjoué au Bénin : Talon explique pourquoi il a sollicité l’armée nigériane
It's an open secret. The Nigerian army intervened in Benin on Sunday, December 7, 2025, the day of the attempted coup against President Patrice Talon. During a press conference yesterday, Thursday, December 18, the Beninese leader explained the reasons why he requested assistance from his giant neighbor to the east.
According to him, "(the mutineers) have entrenched themselves in the Togbin military base with armored vehicles... The army has also positioned armored vehicles not far from the camp... But to avoid exchanges (of fire) which would cause a lot of damage in the base located in the heart of Togbin, it was decided after analyzing the situation with the military leaders, to call on a country likely (to help Benin) to carry out surgical strikes."
It would be unreasonable for Benin to invest hundreds of billions to buy such weapons.
“We do not have aircraft capable of carrying out targeted strikes to destroy one or two armored vehicles (controlled by the mutineers),” admits Patrice Talon. He hopes that the country will one day purchase these military vehicles, but for the moment, it is not a priority.
“We have come a long way and we dedicate our resources to ensuring we have the bare minimum. It would not be reasonable for Benin to invest hundreds of billions to buy such weapons, even if their use may prove necessary at certain times in life,” assures Patrice Talon.
It is worth recalling that Nigerian military aircraft carried out strikes on armored vehicles controlled by the mutineers at the Togbin military base.
"We have completed the necessary formalities to ensure that this intervention takes place within the framework of ECOWAS."
For the Beninese leader, this action was necessary to make the mutineers understand "that they are completely powerless." He also specified that this Nigerian intervention took place within the framework of ECOWAS.
“We appealed to them via ECOWAS, via President Tinubu himself, and we completed the necessary formalities that same day to ensure that the intervention would take place within the framework of ECOWAS, in a standardized and precise manner, and we explained the framework within which we wanted to conduct it. We reassured President Tinubu that this would prevent many losses of human life,” said the former cotton magnate.
