Révision constitutionnelle au Bénin: septennat pour le président et création d'un Sénat
Beninese lawmakers on Saturday adopted a constitutional amendment that extends the presidential term to seven years, starting from the next presidential election in April, and creates a Senate, according to parliamentary sources.
The limit on the number of presidential terms remains set at two. The current head of state, Patrice Talon, will also step down next April after ten years in power.
His successor, Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, is the overwhelming favorite in the presidential election, in the absence of the main opposition party whose candidate was excluded for lack of sufficient endorsements.
The constitutional revision, put forward by the ruling majority, was adopted by a large majority of deputies (90 votes for, 19 against).
The presidential term will be extended from five to seven years and the Senate will be composed of at least 25 parliamentarians, some appointed by the head of state and others ex officio members such as former presidents.
