Soudan: une frappe de drone fait 32 morts au Darfour

A drone strike in Sudan, on a town controlled by paramilitaries in North Darfur state, killed at least 32 civilians, including children, a medical source and three residents told AFP on Thursday.

The attack, which took place on Wednesday, comes amid a resurgence of violence by both the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who have been at war since April 2023.

Hassan Khater, a resident of the town of Koutoum, told AFP in a text message that the drone had struck a house where a wedding was taking place. He said he and others had buried 32 victims on Thursday.

Hussein Eissa, who also took part in the burial, sent AFP a list of the victims, including 12 children.

A third resident, who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons, indicated that the strike took place around 10:00 PM (8:00 PM GMT) on Wednesday and "hit the house twice, completely destroying the building."

"All the victims were pulled from the rubble and then buried," he said.

The El-Facher resistance committee, a group that has been documenting abuses since the beginning of the conflict, claimed that the strike hit the Al-Salama district, blaming it on the army.

A medical source had earlier told AFP that 12 people had been taken to Koutoum Hospital. Sixteen people were injured, including children.

The army did not immediately comment on the attack.

The FSR condemned it in a statement, reporting a death toll of at least 56, including 17 children.

In recent months, drone strikes have been taking place almost daily throughout Sudan, particularly in the South Kordofan region, now the main battleground of the war, as well as in the western areas controlled by the RSF, notably in Darfur.

Last week, the United Nations recorded more than 500 civilians killed by these attacks between January and mid-March, warning of the "devastating impact" of drones.

"The teams are receiving patients suffering from horrific injuries," said Muriel Boursier, coordinator for Doctors Without Borders in Darfur, mentioning "penetrating impacts, amputated limbs, and extensive burns."

"The scale of the violence and atrocities is unbearable," she added.

Last week, a drone attack attributed to the FSR hit an operating room and a maternity ward in a hospital in White Nile State (south), killing ten people, according to MSF.

The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced more than 11 million, and caused what the UN describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

The UN has declared a state of famine in several areas, and both sides are accused of abuses, including sexual violence and massacres, by numerous reports and testimonies.
