Une attaque dans le centre du Nigeria fait plusieurs morts (autorités, habitants)
Armed men attacked a village in Benue State, central Nigeria, killing several people, authorities and residents said Sunday.
The state of Benue is located in a region regularly confronted with tensions between farmers and herders over land and natural resources, as well as kidnappings for ransom perpetrated by local armed groups, known as "bandits".
Benue State government spokesman Tersoo Kula confirmed the attack in Mbalom village, in the Gwer East local government area, telling AFP that "there were definitely casualties", but he did not yet have figures.
A resident, Terseer Ngutor, said over the phone: "I can tell you that 17 people have been killed."
"The attackers arrived (...) around 5 p.m. on Saturday and were shooting in all directions. I was far away. When they left, we started looking for our loved ones," he testified.
Another resident, Gbade John, also reported the deaths of "17 people" and numerous injuries.
The governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, blamed the attack on "suspected armed herders", calling the act "barbaric".
