Sonko – coalition Diomaye : au-delà des sourires officiels...
There is a simmering tension in the corridors of power, just waiting for one wrong word to erupt into the open. For the past few weeks, Senegal's most closely watched political couple has been walking a tightrope.
The events of this weekend demonstrated this once again. To mark the fourth anniversary of the Awalé party, its president, Dr. Abdourahmane Diouf, gave a platform to what some called the "reasonable allies." Reasonable for whom? And above all, against whom?
One detail struck observers. Those who took turns at the podium repeatedly alluded to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who remained silent, but said little, if anything, about Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. A silence more eloquent than a thousand speeches. The most notable interventions—those of a high-ranking representative of the president and a special advisor—all converged on the same idea: rallying around Diomaye. The implication, of course, being that he was the one who agreed to share the top job in the executive branch.
The message, wrapped in political courtesy, is crystal clear. Governance must be done with those who accept compromise, not with the "Pastef purists" who see any negotiation as a capitulation.
Sonko, for his part, is no longer hiding. Annoyed, direct, sometimes even fiery. "Let me govern," he declared, denouncing a "lack of authority" in the country. His words crack like a border he wants to draw: himself on one side, the moderates on the other.
Today's newspaper headlines were not mistaken: something profound is at stake beneath the official smiles. A battle for influence is taking on the appearance of an encirclement strategy. Sonko is not being criticized directly—too risky—but he is being eroded subtly, little by little, by isolating him. This is pure politics, the old-school Senegalese approach, the kind that builds loyalty by weakening the most turbulent ally.
The irony is that this coalition was born from a bond forged in a very particular context: prison, riots, and a landslide victory in the popular vote. But governing has never been about perpetuating activism: it's about arbitrating, making concessions, and compromising. And it's often at this point that leaders part ways.
As Diomaye asserts himself as president, Sonko rediscovers himself as party leader. Two legitimacies that no longer overlap. Two paths that may cease to intersect.
The Prime Minister promises a turning point: "After the 8th, nothing will be the same." His "Terà meeting" on Saturday will reveal whether he chooses appeasement or a break with the past. But one thing is certain: Senegal is watching. With concern, sometimes with hope, always with vigilance.
Because beyond the political maneuvering, one truth remains: in a country that has never been so demanding of its leaders, the rift at the top could become the most formidable enemy of the change of power that it brought to power.
To govern is to choose. And from now on, we will have to choose together — or accept the possibility of separating.

Wait and see
Moment de choix difficile pour les Pastefiens.
