Échos d'ailleurs : la célébration du 66ème anniversaire de l'indépendance du Sénégal en Gambie
I am delighted to share with you the vibrant echo of the celebration of the 66th anniversary of our beloved nation's independence, a memorable event orchestrated by the Embassy of Senegal in The Gambia, under the enlightened leadership of Her Excellency Ambassador Mariame Sy. This evening, far more than a simple commemoration, stood as a true testament to the unwavering strength and profound richness of our bilateral relations with The Gambia.
The scale of the participation underscored the crucial importance of this meeting. The guest list was exceptionally prestigious, notably including ministers from the Gambian government, alongside mayors and members of parliament representing both the majority and the opposition, signifying inclusivity around shared values. The event was also honored by Gambian civil society, key players in the Senegalese private sector whose generosity made this magnificent event possible, and the dynamic Senegalese associations established in The Gambia. The accredited diplomatic community and Gambian and international private companies operating in the country also responded to the invitation, transforming this celebration into a fruitful forum for exchange and fraternity, and a powerful springboard for economic, cultural, and social diplomacy.
In a poignant and deeply inspiring address, Her Excellency the Ambassador recalled the essence of the close friendship between Senegal and The Gambia. She emphasized that this evening offered a unique opportunity to highlight "the singular relationship that unites Senegal and The Gambia, a relationship that cannot be reduced to a mere partnership between neighboring states, so long-standing, rich, and profoundly human is it." These words resonated perfectly, illustrating the intrinsic nature of a bond that transcends mere geographical borders to be rooted in a shared history and culture. Illustrating this enduring fraternity, Ambassador Sy recalled the emblematic friendly football match of March 31st, where our venerable Lions of Senegal faced off against the valiant Scorpions of The Gambia at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium. She affirmed with conviction that "Our fraternity was once again powerfully expressed... beyond the match, it was a true moment of communion, revealing the sincerity and vitality of the ties between our two peoples." A sporting moment that transformed into a veritable ode to unity. She also commended the commitment and professionalism of our armed forces present on Gambian territory under the ECOWAS banner.
She also highlighted the unwavering political will of our leaders, optimistically declaring that "It is on this solid foundation that Presidents Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Adama Barrow are working to strengthen ambitious cooperation, geared towards development and shared prosperity, for the greater benefit of our people." A clear commitment to a common and flourishing future.
Addressing the Senegalese community residing in The Gambia specifically, Her Excellency expressed her profound gratitude and well-deserved pride. She emphasized: "Dear compatriots living in The Gambia, you are an active, respected, and fully integrated community. In this regard, I wish to express our deep gratitude to the Gambian authorities and people for the warm welcome and open-mindedness that allow you to live and thrive here as if you were at home. Through your hard work and dedication, you actively contribute to the prosperity of both nations." A heartfelt tribute to the diaspora, a true bridge between our peoples.
The evening was also a feast for the senses and the mind. Senegalese music icon Souleymane Faye electrified the stage, followed by a remarkable performance from the slam poetry group from the Senegalese High School of Banjul, whose poetic flair captivated the audience. A fashion show, highlighting the creativity of Senegalese and Gambian designers, celebrated elegance and cultural fusion. Guests also had the chance to win two round-trip tickets from Banjul to Dakar and back, generously donated by Air Senegal, symbolizing the air link between our capital cities.
In conclusion, the Ambassador expressed his fervent hope that this unique fraternal relationship would continue to grow stronger and flourish, for the mutual benefit and lasting well-being of the Senegalese and Gambian people. The celebration concluded magnificently with a sumptuous banquet, featuring two Senegalese dishes, a true invitation to a culinary journey into the heart of our gastronomy. Guests had the privilege of savoring the renowned thiéboudienne, a masterpiece inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list, as well as the delicious thiéré mboum, a couscous prepared with ancestral know-how and the generosity emblematic of our tradition. It was a moment of genuine cultural exchange and profound communion, beautifully sealing this unforgettable celebration.
