Macky Sall, vers le Secrétariat général de l’ONU ? (par Aboubakry Diop)
A new factor has now emerged in the debate: Macky Sall's candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations is now supported by a majority of African countries.
This continental support significantly alters the terms of the analysis.
This is no longer just an individual ambition, but an African political dynamic aimed at having more influence in international balances.
With twelve years at the helm of Senegal and his stint as President of the African Union in 2022, Macky Sall has recognized experience in diplomatic circles.
During his continental mandate, he represented Africa's voice on key structural issues:
Security Council reform, advocacy for a permanent African seat, equitable access to international funding and vaccines.
His networks, established in both Western and Eastern capitals, as well as his ability to engage in dialogue with partners with divergent interests, constitute significant assets in the perspective of multilateral governance.
Certainly, his second term in Senegal was marked by internal political tensions that fueled the debate.
But in international relations, states often assess candidates based on experience, mediation skills and diplomatic weight, rather than on national controversies.
The fact that several African capitals now agree on his profile reflects a clear desire to present a candidate capable of defending the continent's interests at the highest global level.
The possible accession of a former Senegalese president to the head of the UN would constitute a strong signal for Africa, even though two Africans have already held this position: Boutros Boutros-Ghali and Kofi Annan.
Therefore, the question lies more in the realm of global geopolitical balances:
Will the international community support this dynamic driven by the African continent?
The world is listening to Africa
