Algérie – Sénégal : La visite du Khalife de la Fayda Tidjania scelle une nouvelle dynamique de coopération
Spiritual diplomacy lies at the heart of relations between Algiers and Dakar. The Grand Caliph of the Fayda Tidjania, Sheikh Mohamed El-Mahi Ibrahim Niass, is currently undertaking a high-level official tour of Algeria. Between presidential audiences, strategic agreements, and solemn tributes, this official visit is laying the groundwork for a strengthened bilateral partnership, particularly focused on youth and education.

The political launch of this visit took place on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the presidential palace in Algiers. The President of the Algerian Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, received the Caliph Sheikh Mohamed El-Mahi Ibrahim Niass in a formal audience.
This meeting highlighted the crucial role of religious brotherhoods, and particularly the Tijaniyya, as cultural and diplomatic bridges between African nations.
On the Algerian side, high-ranking officials attended the meeting, including Minister of State Brahim Merad, the Caliph General of the Tijaniyya order in Algeria, Sheikh Sidi Ali Belarabi, and Mohamed Hassouni, advisor to the president on religious affairs. The Senegalese delegation accompanying the religious leader consisted of Mohamed El Khalifa Sheikh Ibrahim Niass, Mohamed Moustapha Niass, Mohamed Macky Niass, and Abdourahmane Ndao.
Training, youth and technical partnerships
Beyond its purely spiritual dimension, this visit quickly materialized in the socio-economic sphere. On Thursday, May 21, 2026, the Senegalese delegation was received by the Algerian Minister of Vocational Training and Education, Nassima Arhab.
The discussions converged on sectors of the future and highly strategic for Senegal, including agriculture, livestock farming, fishing, solar energy for the energy transition, as well as the sewing trades.
Algeria and the Fayda Tidjania have agreed to the upcoming implementation of vocational training programs, scholarships and a direct transfer of skills to Senegalese youth.

The symbolic highlight of this day, May 21st, took place within the Great Mosque of Algiers (Djamaâ El-Djazaïr). The Caliph received a vibrant tribute from the Algerian scientific and religious community, in the presence of ministers, the president of the Economic and Social Council, as well as the international diplomatic corps representing countries such as Turkey, Iran, Mauritania, Niger and Gabon.
The rector of the mosque, Sheikh Mohamed Maâmoun Al Kacimi Al Hoceini, took advantage of this platform to recall the historical role of the Tijaniyya in promoting an Islam of peace, moderation and tolerance across the continent.

In a speech read on his behalf, Sheikh Mohamed El-Mahi Ibrahim Niass warmly thanked the Algerian authorities. He praised the Djamaâ El-Djazaïr as much more than an architectural masterpiece: a true symbol of knowledge and human endeavor, destined to radiate African spirituality. This historic visit confirms that faith and knowledge remain the strongest foundations of cooperation along the Algiers-Dakar axis.
