Condamnation des 18 supporters sénégalais: Ibrahim Ndiaye propose une médiation pour une issue apaisée
The sentencing of Senegalese football fans in Morocco has sparked outrage and concern in Senegal. Several young people have been tried for incidents related to sporting events, and some of the sentences are considered disproportionate by their families and the public.
Ibrahim Ndiaye, president of the Moroccan Foundation for Innovative Diplomacy (MFDI) and of the Europe-Africa Commission, spoke about the situation of the Senegalese supporters recently sentenced in Morocco.
In an interview with Seneweb, Mr. Ndiaye presented the role of the foundation, which works in the field of diplomacy through civil society. "We try to promote dialogue between Morocco and African countries, to defend fundamental rights and to intervene in certain cases, particularly for Senegalese facing difficulties abroad," he explained.
He specified that the foundation has a legal and diplomatic network capable of supporting detainees and their families, notably through legal advice and the possibility of contacting the relevant diplomatic authorities.
Steps to reduce sentences
According to Mr. Ndiaye, the foundation would play a mediating role to facilitate a consensual solution between Morocco and Senegal. "We can intervene to explore legal and diplomatic mechanisms, provide legal support to families, and mobilize our networks in Morocco and Africa for a matter that respects the law," he explained.
He also emphasized that the MFID already has links with the Senegalese and Moroccan authorities: “We have met with the Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Senegal, as well as the Moroccan ambassador in Dakar. This allows us to know the interlocutors and to play a constructive role if necessary.”
Towards a binational committee
Ibrahim Ndiaye proposes the establishment of a binational Senegal-Morocco committee, bringing together diplomatic authorities, lawyers, representatives of civil society, and families, to find solutions for the supporters already convicted and those whose cases are in the appeals phase. According to him, a combination of diplomacy and law is essential to resolving this case peacefully.
"Given the historical and cultural relations between Senegal and Morocco, and the sensitivity of the issue, we believe that a coordinated approach between States, with the support of civil society, is the best solution," concluded Mr. Ndiaye.
While the detainees still have the option to appeal, several voices are calling for mediation that respects the law and bilateral relations to guarantee fair and humane treatment. The case continues to be closely monitored by the authorities, families, and civil society.
