"There have been significant positive changes in the human rights situation in Senegal during the year," begins the summary of the 2024 Human Rights Report published on the U.S. State Department website on Wednesday, August 20.
According to the document, the March presidential election was widely reported to be fair and free of abuses and irregularities. “By year’s end, observers reported that authorities had released all political prisoners. Significant human rights issues included credible reports of: cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment; arbitrary arrest or detention; and severe restrictions on freedom of expression and media freedom,” the US rapporteurs noted.
They report that the government has taken credible steps to identify and punish those responsible for human rights violations, but impunity for abuses has occurred.
Additionally, in the southern Casamance region, located between The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau, a low-level insurgency between security forces and armed separatists continued, but violence during the year was rare.
