11 milliards de transactions, 248 millions de comptes…: les chiffres de l'essor de la monnaie électronique dans l’Uemoa
Within the West African Monetary Union (WAEMU), electronic money has made significant strides over the past decade. “WAEMU began a digital transformation in 2015, marked by the adoption of a regulatory framework for electronic money activities, thus giving it an important and growing role in financial transactions,” the Governor of the BCEAO said on Tuesday.
These initiatives have resulted in a significant increase in the volume of electronic money transactions within the Union. These transactions have risen from 260 million to 11 billion between 2014 and 2024, Jean-Claude Kassi Brou revealed during the official launch of the interoperable platform for the Pi-Spi instant payment system.
It also reports that the number of electronic money accounts has also increased, rising from 18 million to nearly 248 million over the same period.
“The strong growth of digital payments has been a powerful driver of financial inclusion, which has improved significantly to reach nearly 74% today, compared to less than 15% some twenty years ago,” said the Governor of the BCEAO.
