Dette publique : Le Sénégal procède au remboursement anticipé de deux obligations en devises
Senegal has made early repayments of two installments related to its foreign currency obligations, just days before the arrival in Dakar of a mission from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) tasked with continuing discussions on a new financing program.
According to information reported by Bloomberg, citing sources close to the matter, the State of Senegal paid a coupon of 53.75 million euros on its euro-denominated bond maturing in 2037. An additional payment of 38.8 million dollars was also made on a dollar-denominated bond maturing in 2031. According to the same source, these payments were made before their due date, which was next week.
This operation comes amid ongoing discussions between Senegalese authorities and the IMF. A mission from the international financial institution is expected in Dakar from mid-June to continue technical discussions regarding a future support program.
The Minister of Finance and Budget, Cheikh Diba, indicated to the deputies on May 22nd that the government aimed to reach an agreement on the main points of discussion before the end of June.
By honoring these financial commitments ahead of schedule, Senegal confirms its willingness to meet its obligations to its creditors and to maintain the confidence of international financial markets. According to Bloomberg, this move is seen as a positive signal to investors as the country continues its negotiations with the IMF on financing prospects and debt sustainability.
Since the suspension of the previous IMF program in 2024, Senegalese authorities have undertaken several reforms aimed at strengthening budget transparency and public debt management. Ongoing discussions with the Bretton Woods institution should lead to the establishment of a new framework for financial cooperation to support the country's economic priorities.
