The Senegalese economy is showing positive momentum in formal employment, according to the latest data from the National Agency for Statistics and Demography. The modern sector, excluding public administration, saw its workforce increase by 1.9% in the third quarter of 2025, reaching a total of 337,415 employees. This growth is accompanied by an improvement in overall income, as the total wage bill rose by 2.1%, exceeding 385.9 billion CFA francs during the period.

The report highlights that the modern labor market rests on a solid foundation of stable contracts, with 76.6% of employees holding permanent positions. However, certain sectors, such as education, mining, and construction, continue to rely heavily on seasonal labor to meet their specific needs. Furthermore, the average working time per employee has increased slightly to 41.6 hours per week.

However, data analysis reveals marked disparities, particularly in terms of gender and income distribution. Men hold a predominant position in permanent employment, representing 73.9% of the total workforce. While women are in the minority, they are more heavily represented in the service sector, especially in healthcare, education, and financial activities.

From a socio-professional perspective, the contrast is striking between the number of employees and their share of the wealth received. Although manual workers constitute the largest category, representing nearly 48% of the permanent workforce, they receive only 22.2% of the total wage bill. Conversely, senior managers and technicians, who represent only 14.4% of the workforce, alone account for 41.7% of the compensation paid in the third quarter of 2025. This concentration of wages is particularly evident in the information and communication sectors.
