Le Sénégal prévoit de stopper l’importation de gaz dès 2026 : Des économies majeures en perspective
Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has announced a major decision in Senegal's energy policy: starting in 2026, the country will no longer rely on gas imports. This strategic direction is expected to generate nearly 140 billion CFA francs in savings and lead to a significant reduction in the cost of electricity for households and businesses.
This decision is part of the exploitation of the significant gas resources discovered in recent years off the Senegalese coast, particularly in the GTA (Grand Tortue Ahmeyim) and Sangomar fields, whose commercial production is expected to begin by the end of 2025.
"Starting in 2026, Senegalese gas will power our power plants. We will thus drastically reduce our dependence on imports and save around 140 billion CFA francs per year," Ousmane Sonko said at a press conference in Dakar.
The stated objective is clear: to achieve energy sovereignty by capitalizing on local resources to stimulate the national economy, reduce production costs and increase access to more affordable electricity.
This decision should also allow a reduction in the State's energy bill, often weighed down by the subsidies needed to keep prices at an affordable level.
The end of gas imports should logically lead to a reduction in the cost of electricity production, which could translate into a reduction in electricity prices for consumers.
