«Les résultats commencent à se faire sentir…» : A Vélingara, l’optimisme du Pr. Diomaye pour la filière coton
The President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, is currently in the Kolda region, where he has begun an economic tour. In the Vélingara department, he was able to assess the state of development of the cotton sector. The Head of State emphasized that the sector is recovering, thanks to the efforts made by the government.
"The results are starting to show when we see the qualitative improvement that has been made in production. Obviously, the State will continue to support producers and invest in this sector, which is particularly promising given its potential for local processing and therefore added value," said President Faye.
For now, the harvest levels are still far from those seen during the boom years: "We must recognize, in truth, that we are still far from the record production we achieved in Senegal in 1991. We were at 50,000 tonnes, today we are at 25,000 tonnes, or half."
But things are on the right track. President Diomaye showed stakeholders that two years ago, the country produced only two tons. Today, it has climbed to 15,000 tons. Today, the level of harvests has significantly improved.
"This means that if we continue at this rate of increasing production, we will not only reach and very quickly surpass the record mark of 50,000 tonnes, but the target of 100,000 tonnes will be achievable well before the deadline," he said.
The head of state declares that farmers are beginning to achieve significant results in terms of yields. He believes that if Senegalese people realize there is no problem with the sector's market share in light of international demand, many more people could embrace it.
To support this momentum, a support program has been put in place. It instructed the Minister of Agriculture to ensure the timely provision of inputs and seeds. "Support with mechanization will follow, along with everything necessary to ensure that we have created optimal conditions for producers to increase yields," he assured.
