Abebe Aemro Selassie, Directeur du département Afrique du FMI
This Thursday, economic prospects in Sub-Saharan Africa were on the agenda for the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Spring Meetings. Senegal's situation became a key topic of discussion, particularly during a briefing by Abebe Aemro Selassie, Director of the IMF's African Department.
Regarding the progress of discussions with Senegal, he informed that very constructive exchanges have taken place with Senegalese authorities, "including this week." Speaking to journalists, he commended the action of the Senegalese authorities in alerting the IMF to the existence of a stock of previously undisclosed debt.
"The government alerted us very quickly and has made considerable efforts to identify the full extent of the misreporting. They have shared these assessments with us and have worked to identify the root causes of the breakdowns and systemic problems. We are grateful to them. So there is no transparency issue regarding public debt, etc. On the contrary," stated Mr. Selassie to the press.
He added: "This administration has demonstrated exceptional frankness and transparency, and we commend them for it. However, they inherited a substantial debt, and the question now is how to address it and what is the best way to manage it," clarified the Director of the IMF's African Department.
It should be noted that Mr. Selassie will leave his position as Director of the IMF's African Department on May 1, 2026, to retire. He will be replaced by Zeine Zeidane, who is currently Deputy Director in the Middle East and Central Asia Department (MCD), where he oversaw the IMF's relations with key Gulf countries.
