Ameth Babou : cinq choses à savoir sur le meilleur élève du Sénégal
For the second year in a row, the student from the Prytanée Militaire dominated the Concours Général. L'Observateur retraced his journey. Excerpts.
1. Diary Sow
One day in 2019. Nine-year-old Ameth Babou is in his final year of primary school. The name of a student at the prestigious Diourbel Science High School is on everyone's lips. For the second year in a row, she has won first place in the General Competition. The boy is amazed. "Someone has mesmerized me. It's Diary Sow," he confesses to his mother, the same boy who would achieve the same feat seven years later, twice in a row being named the best student in Senegal.
2. Scientific-literary
With Ameth Babou, it's not a question of science or literature. Rather, it's science and literature: the student at the Prytanée Militaire won four prizes, in French, Citizenship and Human Rights, Philosophy, and Physics. He scored a total of 68 points, placing him above the 117 other winners of the 2026 Concours Général.
3. Tabaski
This year, Ameth Babou did not spend Tabaski with his family in Dakar. The student preferred to stay at the Prytanée to study. Taking two days off just to go and party? No thanks. "On the phone, he explained to his father that he preferred to stay in Saint-Louis. Forty-eight hours without studying seemed like a luxury he couldn't afford," reports L'Observateur.
4. The Math Mistake
This year, for the first time since sixth grade, his math average fell below 18. His score remained stuck at 13. A shock. "I had moments of doubt," he confessed to L'Observateur. But very quickly, Ameth Babou got back on track. "He seeks advice from his elders, talks with his classmates, and relies on a family that never stops believing in him when he himself falters," reports the newspaper of the Future Media Group.
5. Arsenal, World Cup…
Like almost all boys his age, Ameth Babou is passionate about football. A fan of Arsenal and a die-hard supporter of the Lions. Despite his studies, the competition taking place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada is on his agenda.
