Crise universitaire : Aly Ngouille Ndiaye appelle au dialogue et à la vérité
The university crisis that has gripped Senegal for several weeks remains unresolved. Despite the release of the detained students and the prosecutor's statement regarding the circumstances of Abdoulaye Ba's death, tensions remain high within the university community. When questioned on the matter, former Interior Minister Aly Ngouille Ndiaye asserted that the situation cannot be resolved through force, but rather through dialogue.
"Senegal is a country of dialogue. We must negotiate," he declared this Sunday during the program "Point de vue" on RTS, referring to the previous university crises of 2017-2018, which had found solutions through consultation.
According to him, the positions of the government and those of the students remain "very far apart", hence the need to create bridges to bring the opinions of both sides closer together.
Welcoming the rector's decision to establish a framework for dialogue among the various stakeholders, Aly Ngouille Ndiaye emphasized that the crisis extends far beyond Dakar. "The problem with higher education is a national one," he added, also mentioning the persistent disruptions to the academic calendar and the uncertainty surrounding the catch-up of missed academic years.
The former minister also called for justice to be served and for responsibilities to be clearly established in the case of Abdoulaye Ba's death.
According to him, if the prosecutor's hypothesis—that of a fire followed by a fall—is confirmed, it would highlight serious dysfunctions: overcrowding in university dormitories, blocked emergency exits, and faulty safety equipment. These are problems, he says, that must be corrected immediately in all universities.
Regarding the sanctions already imposed on certain police officials, including the commissioner of Point E, the former Minister of the Interior called for caution. "The investigations will determine how far back the chain of responsibility goes," he stated.
In conclusion, Aly Ngouille Ndiaye called for immediate measures to calm the situation: reopening the student social center, reinstating the elected student associations, and engaging in structured dialogue with the students. "If this is done, everything should go smoothly," he stated.
