Grève dans les Universités : La Fenapes appelle au dialogue et à la retenue
The National Federation of Parents' and Students' Associations of Senegal (FENAPES) has issued a solemn appeal for dialogue in response to rising tensions in public universities. Repeated delays in scholarship payments, the primary source of income for students, are now threatening the stability of the university system.
The organization is raising the alarm about a crisis that is weakening higher education institutions and urges stakeholders to "prioritize dialogue." It is directly appealing to the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation to find "a swift and positive resolution to this situation," reports Le Soleil.
For Fenapes, the delay in scholarships has become unbearable, recalling that they constitute "the main source of life for the student".
Tensions are rising on several campuses across the country.
- In Kaolack, students at El Hadj Ibrahima Niass University have been demanding better living conditions for two weeks.
- In Kaffrine, anger erupted on November 10 with demonstrations in the streets.
- In Dakar, students at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) are staging a protest to demand payment of their scholarships.
- In Saint-Louis, students blocked the national road for the same reasons, deplores Fenapes.
A Call for Responsibility
While recognizing the legitimacy of the demands, Fenapes calls on students to exercise moderation and a sense of responsibility.
Its president, Ibrahima Top, insists: "Restraint and dialogue must prevail over confrontation. Parents, authorities, and students must work together to preserve peace and stability within the university environment."
