Menaces voilées, tentatives d’intimidation, ponctions jugées injustes : Le G7/Thiès appelle à l'unité et à la dignité pour faire face
On behalf of the G7, which brings together the most representative education unions, Mr. Gueye Sirakhata, Secretary General of SAEMSS/Thiès, made a statement to denounce "the veiled threats, the attempts at intimidation and the deductions deemed unfair on teachers' salaries".
He denounces a climate of pressure fueled by sanctions and salary deductions, as well as attempts to pit teachers against parents and portray them as troublemakers. He also remarks: "We are neither weak, nor isolated, nor disorganized. Teachers remain builders of conscience and essential pillars of the Nation."
For Sirakhata Gueye, "making demands while respecting the law is neither a crime nor an act of rebellion. Demanding the implementation of signed agreements falls under the legitimate defense of professional dignity." He also urged his colleagues not to give in to fear, reminding them that those who educate young people cannot "live on their knees."
On the issue of salary deductions, Mr. Gueye acknowledged the difficulties they create for families. However, he maintained that a reduced salary should not equate to diminished dignity. In his view, a strong state does not punish its teachers, but prioritizes dialogue, honors its commitments, and protects public education.
He denounced attempts to manipulate and divide the teaching profession through accusations of irresponsibility or lack of patriotism. He also emphasized the teachers' daily commitment: preparing exams, supervising students beyond official hours, and marking papers behind the scenes.
“We are not the enemies of the school. We are the school,” Mr. Gueye emphasized, calling for a response based on unity, union discipline, active solidarity, and strict adherence to the legal framework. He stated that no intimidation should lead to the isolation of a colleague, and that every threat concerns the entire teaching staff.
Sirakhata Gueye urged his colleagues to remain confident. He reminded them that union victories have always required patience, courage, and perseverance. Above all, he emphasized his point: "The teachers' struggle is not against the nation or the state, but for greater justice and fairness." He called for continued solidarity, organization, and determination to achieve justice and preserve the dignity of teachers, expressing his conviction that teachers will ultimately be heard because they are the ones who shape the future.
