“Mr. Mababa DIAGNE, Full Professor, payroll number 106 014/D, is appointed Rector of Amadou Mahtar MBOW University, replacing Professor Ibrahima CISSE, who has been granted his retirement pension rights.”
Mababa Diagne's appointment comes as no surprise except to those who haven't followed his career. Almost everything pointed to him becoming the next rector of UAM.
In truth, his appointment is a logical progression given the responsibilities he has held so far at this second university in the capital. In 2017, Mababa Diagne joined the UAM coordination team to head the Geosciences sub-department. The following year, this lecturer-researcher at the Institute of Earth Sciences (IST) was seconded by UCAD to Amadou Mahtar MBOW University (UAM).
At UAM, Mababa Diagne became the first Director of the Higher School of Mines, Geology and the Environment (ESMGE) and, simultaneously, Coordinator of the Higher School of Urban Planning, Architecture and Territorial Development (ESU2A). It was therefore quite natural that he was appointed, in March 2024, Director of the Polytech Higher School of Diamniadio, the entity federating all the higher education institutions of UAM.
As a member of both the Academic Council and the Board of Directors, he has served several times as Acting Rector of UAM. His appointment is therefore a logical next step in light of his career.
A full professor since July 2022, Mababa Diagne is the head of the doctoral program "Georesources, Environment, Imaging and Planning" at the PCSTUI Doctoral School of Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar. A design geologist, he graduated from the Institute of Earth Sciences (IST) at UCAD in 1998. Combining studies and work (quality engineer at CSE), he defended his doctoral thesis in Geomaterials in France in 2006, specializing in Environmental Civil Engineering.
Recruited from the University of Thiès as an assistant, he joined UCAD two years later as a lecturer, following the cancellation of the transfer of IST to Thiès. At IST, he quickly rose through the ranks: Director of Studies from 2010 to 2012, then Director of the Institute from 2014 to 2017, before his departure for UAM.
Author of several publications, he was a laureate of the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific and Technical Research (FIRST) of the Senegalese Ministry in charge of Scientific Research, 2023 edition (Cosmétargile project), as well as several other prizes.
