Ucad : Le Sudes relève les incohérences du Conseil académique
The UCAD branch of the Unified Union of Teachers of Senegal (SUDES) does not support the measures taken by the Academic Council during its meeting on February 12. In a statement dated February 13, the union rejects all the announced decisions and points out inconsistencies.
Regarding the resumption of educational activities approved by the Council, the Sudes/Esr believes it is a denial of social reality: "Declaring the 'continuity of educational activities' without first reopening the social campus or restoring decent living and working conditions for students is a dangerous administrative fiction."
The Sudes student union considers it "absurd" to call students back to lecture halls when some have suffered psychological trauma and others are in detention, not to mention the massive police presence on campus. Sudes reiterates that the academic calendar cannot be normalized by administrative decisions, but rather by establishing "the material and psychological conditions for a smooth resumption of classes." Therefore, it demands the "immediate" reopening of the student social campus to preserve the current academic year.
Regarding the suspension of student associations, the union denounces "an attack on dialogue and representation." It describes this measure as a threat to civil liberties and counterproductive. "How do the authorities intend to conduct consultations for a lasting solution to the crisis if they deliberately exclude the legitimate interlocutors that are the student associations?" it laments. For the Sudes union, this amounts to severing the thread of dialogue.
Therefore, it "demands" the reinstatement of student associations, as well as the release of detained students. The Sudes also rejects the ad hoc committee and refuses to endorse "a body hastily assembled to legitimize the silencing of student voices." Its conviction is that any reform of student representation must be carried out with them, neither without them nor against them.
Taking up the cause of students regarding scholarships, the SUDES union is demanding the payment of back pay. It urges the government to show compassion and clear-sightedness on this issue, as it directly impacts the social climate at the university.
Regarding university governance, the Sudes (National Union of Higher Education Teachers) is adamant: no concessions on academic freedom and autonomy. It regrets that "educational decisions are being dictated by security imperatives and political pressures." And for this reason, it calls on the government to commit to guaranteeing this fundamental principle for universities.
