Ziguinchor : L’école face au défi des sciences et du décrochage
Each year, fewer than 10% of students choose science tracks. The reasons are numerous: inadequately equipped laboratories, teachers poorly trained in new methods, and programs deemed too difficult and unattractive. "Children are turning away from science for fear of failure," a parent representative pointed out.
The regional education inspector, Papa Gorgui Ndiaye, stressed "the urgent need to invest in laboratories and restore science to its true value."
While dropout rates remain low in primary school, they climb to nearly 11% in secondary school. Grade repetition exacerbates the situation and jeopardizes students' academic progress. Teachers are advocating for individualized support and academic assistance programs to keep young people in the education system.
Thus, parents, teachers, and local authorities are converging on a common goal: to reverse the trend. School governance and community involvement are presented as essential levers for sustainably improving academic results in the region.
