Renégociation des contrats pétroliers : «Ça ne sert à rien, c’est une perte de temps», un expert explique
Renegotiating oil contracts deemed unfavorable to Senegal, as considered by the new authorities, would not be a good option. "It's all pointless. It's a waste of time," stated former Petrosen director general Mamadou Faye bluntly in an interview published this Thursday in L'Observateur. "These oil contracts were negotiated by the State of Senegal, signed by the State of Senegal under clearly defined conditions. Renegotiating these contracts is not how we'll make money."
The source speaking to the Groupe Futurs Médias newspaper estimates that renegotiating the contracts would bring in, at best, "2 or 3 billion [CFA francs] per year." He also points out that this doesn't take into account potential legal disputes that could drag on for ten years.
Mamadou Faye believes the best approach is to develop existing deposits like the gas from the Sangomar project. "Today," the former director of Petrosen points out, "all the neighboring mining countries, whether it's Mali or Guinea, have a huge need for gas and energy. We need to ensure that Senegalese gas can reach these countries, that's all. These projects could potentially generate between 200 and 300 billion CFA francs annually."
