Retrait de Kosmos Energy de Yakaar-Teranga : la mise au point du Dg de Petrosen Holding
In an interview with the national daily newspaper Le Soleil, the CEO of Petrosen Holding, Alioune Guèye, sought to "set the record straight" in order to put an end to the debate surrounding the takeover of the Yakaar-Teranga gas block. He clarified that Kosmos Energy's withdrawal was not a random disengagement, but the result of a rigorous renegotiation process initiated by the new authorities.
According to him, this issue was one of the first priorities of the renegotiation commission set up by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. Faced with the stakes of this block, "which will ensure energy sovereignty and, consequently, the industrial and economic development of Senegal," the State conducted firm discussions, putting three clear legal options on the table: a "voluntary negotiated withdrawal," a "unilateral termination of the contract by the State," or "international arbitration" as a last resort.
Alioune Guèye insists that this move is part of a deliberate power struggle, aimed at protecting Senegal's interests. "This withdrawal is the result of renegotiations on this bloc, initiated since the advent of the new regime," he emphasized, before adding firmly: "We needed this bloc, and they readily accepted our request."
Finally, he clarifies that Kosmos Energy announced a voluntary departure at the request of the Senegalese government, which agreed to allow them the freedom to communicate in order to protect their stock price. It was therefore not a sovereign initiative by the American company, but a diplomatic concession from Senegal after having prevailed on the substance of the matter.
