Bassin du fleuve Gambie : la décrue se poursuit sur l’ensemble des stations hydrométriques.
The latest observations made this morning at 8:00 a.m. at the various hydrometric stations in the Gambia River basin confirm a general downward trend in water levels. According to data published by the Tambacounda–Kédougou Water Resources Brigade, this gradual decline affects both tributaries and the main course of the river.
Tributaries are constantly receding
In Diaguiri, one of the tributaries located upstream of Mako, the measured water level was 2.12 meters, compared to 2.23 meters the previous day. This represents a drop of 11 centimeters in 24 hours. At the same time in 2024, the level reached 5 meters, indicating a significantly wetter year.
The same trend is observed at Afia Pont (Thiokoye), where the water level has fallen from 2.02 m to 1.96 m, 6 centimeters less than the day before. The difference with the situation in October 2024 is particularly marked, since the river then peaked at 5.23 m.
At Niokolo Koba, the level remains almost stable, with 5.56 m this morning compared to 5.57 m the day before, a slight decrease of 1 cm. However, comparisons with previous years reveal a sharp decrease: 9.70 m at the same date in 2024.
The stations of Sinthiou Malème, Goumbayel and Diahra Pont remain below the scale threshold, indicating an advanced drying up of secondary watercourses.
The Gambia River continues to fall in Kédougou, Mako and Gouloumbou
At Kédougou, the water level recorded at 8:00 a.m. was 3.20 meters, compared to 3.30 meters the day before. The trend is therefore downward by 10 cm, far from the level observed at the same date in 2024 (5.34 m). It should be remembered that the alert level at this station is set at 7 meters, which currently places the river at a largely safe level.
In Mako, the situation is similar: 3.16 m recorded this morning compared to 3.26 m the day before, also a drop of 10 cm. In 2024, the river reached 4.48 m, a level higher than that observed this year. The alert level there is set at 6 meters.
The daily data for Simenti have not yet been released, but yesterday's reading was 5.89 m. The alert level for this station remains very far off, at 13 meters.
Finally, in Gouloumbou, the decline in the level is more marked: 7.69 m today compared to 7.96 m the day before, a drop of 27 cm. Although this level remains relatively high, it remains below the alert level (12 m) and, above all, well below the level reached in October 2024 (12.23 m).
A generally stable but declining hydrological situation
All these readings confirm the usual seasonal trend of flood decline observed after the end of the heavy rains. Water levels remain within normal limits, with no immediate threat of flooding in the Gambia River basin.
The hydrological services of the Tambacounda–Kédougou Water Resources Brigade continue daily monitoring to anticipate any developments likely to affect riverside populations and socio-economic activities linked to the river.
