Crue du fleuve Sénégal : l’État appelle à la vigilance dans plusieurs localités
The Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation is warning of a worrying rise in the water levels of the Senegal River, a consequence of the heavy rainfall recorded in recent weeks in the upper basin, particularly at the Bafing Makana and Gourbassi stations.
According to hydrological forecasts covering the period from October 2 to 5, 2025, this upward trend is expected to continue, increasing the risk of flooding in several riverside departments. Several localities have already been affected by overflows.
Highly exposed areas
The departments of Bakel, Matam, Podor, Saint-Louis, and Dagana are among the most exposed to these floods. In the Bakel department, communes such as Ballou, Moudéry, and Diawara are particularly vulnerable. In the Matam region, the localities of Nguijilone, Dembancané, Lobaly, Waoundé, as well as hamlets such as Belly Diallo, are under surveillance.
In Podor, several districts, including Cas Cas, Thillé, Saldé, and Gamadji Saré, are at risk of being affected. The city of Saint-Louis, with its neighborhoods of Pikine, Diaminar, Hydrobase, Goxu Mbathie, and Sor, is also threatened. Finally, in the department of Dagana, areas such as Thiabakh, Diamaguène, and Khouma are on the list of sensitive sectors.
A call for responsibility and preventive measures
Faced with this situation, the Ministry urges local residents and economic stakeholders located along the river to exercise the utmost vigilance. They are advised to take preventive measures without delay to reduce the risks associated with possible overflows.
The government, in collaboration with the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS) and the relevant technical services, assures that it is closely monitoring the development of the situation and promises to regularly share all useful information.
