Drame au marché central de Thiès : Le meurtrier fréquente régulièrement le secteur
"The alleged murderer, an individual who regularly frequents the area, is known to be dangerous due to his habitually violent behavior, always carrying two knives, and often threatening vendors and passersby in this area, near an alcoholic beverage depot." This revelation comes from witnesses to the unspeakable tragedy, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, October 21, 2025, and which plunged the traders of the Thiès central market into dismay.
According to witnesses, the young street vendor, Sakhir, living in the Thialy neighborhood, in the Thiès-Nord commune, was the victim of a deadly attack at the market. Sakhir was a dynamic man who excelled in selling clothes. He also used to provide nail and tattoo services during major events such as Gamou, Magal, Tabaski, Korité, among others.
He led a relatively peaceful life and was well-liked by his family and many shopkeepers. "He was a very respectful boy; he never looked for trouble," said the hairdresser, who knew him well.
It was around 5:30 p.m. that an argument allegedly broke out between Sakhir and the accused. The situation escalated. The assailant reportedly shouted before pulling out a knife and stabbing his victim in the ribs. The young man was knocked to the ground. Despite the cries of witnesses, no intervention was carried out in time, everyone fearing for their own safety. The assailant, after his criminal act, reportedly left the scene walking calmly.
Some attempted to save Sakhir by hastily loading him into an illegal taxi to the hospital, but the young man succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Police forces, quickly alerted, arrested the alleged murderer near the illegal taxi parking lot in Medina Fall.
The tragedy has brought to the forefront the ongoing insecurity problem at the central market, where individuals, often drunk or armed with bladed weapons, are spreading terror. Many shocked shopkeepers and street vendors are denouncing the constant presence of vagrants and homeless people who frequent the area and behave dangerously.
