A shopkeeper posing as a police officer has been caught in his own trap in Guédiawaye. MN, 46, residing in Ouagou Niayes, was arrested after extorting 35,000 CFA francs from a young woman by impersonating a police officer, according to Seneweb sources.
The incident occurred in broad daylight. FF, a cleaning woman, was leaving a hostel in Malibu when she was followed. Upon reaching the Bou Bess market, the man ordered her to stop. Claiming to be a police officer, he informed her that entering the establishment was prohibited and demanded immediate payment of a 35,000 CFA franc fine to avoid arrest.
Panicked, the young woman called her brother for help. He came to her and paid the money. But a few moments later, they both realized that the man hadn't shown any identification and was acting alone.
They immediately alerted the central police station in Guédiawaye, whose officers quickly arrived on the scene.
Taken to the police station, MN readily admitted to the charges against him. Two cell phones and his motorcycle were seized. On the instructions of Prosecutor Saliou Dicko, he was placed in police custody for impersonating a public official and extortion. The investigation is ongoing.
