Ils volent 5 millions d'une tontine pour se marier : le couple finit en prison

A rather unusual incident occurred in Thiès, where a young couple is accused of stealing 5 million FCFA from a tontine, in order to finance their wedding.

The case involves A. Mbaye, an 18-year-old cleaning woman, and her partner, K. Guèye, also 18 and a shopkeeper. In court, the young woman confessed, admitting to having participated in planning the robbery. She explained that she had shown her accomplice the exact location where the money was kept: under the stairs of her employer's home.

According to her statements, the robbery was motivated by a marriage proposal from her boyfriend. "He proposed marriage and promised to buy me a cell phone," she said, justifying her involvement in the targeted burglary.

For his part, K. Guèye denies primary responsibility. He claims that it was his girlfriend who took the crates containing the money before handing them over to him. In his version of events, he maintains that the theft was instigated by A. Mbaye herself, who allegedly suggested he seize the savings club to raise the necessary funds for their wedding. The defendant adds that he then entrusted the money to a certain Khalifa Diop, with whom he went to retrieve the loot. Diop is currently at large.

The victim, B. Lam, explained that she was alerted by the discovery of the tontine's cash boxes abandoned in the street. After checking, she realized the funds were missing and immediately filed a complaint. She is now demanding full reimbursement of the stolen sum.

The public prosecutor considered the facts to be established and requested the application of the law. At the conclusion of the trial, the court found K. Guèye guilty of theft and A. Mbaye guilty of complicity. Both defendants were sentenced to five months' imprisonment each, as well as jointly ordered to pay 5 million FCFA in damages to the plaintiff.

The announcement of the verdict sparked strong emotions in the courtroom, where relatives of the convicted men expressed their distress, between tears and fainting spells.
